Specialist Glazing Replacement to City Centre Canopy, Sheffield

A complex glazing replacement project carried out at height within one of Sheffield’s busy city centre environments.

"Precision planning and specialist installation ensured the successful replacement of glazing within a prominent city-centre canopy"

We were appointed to replace a single failed glazing unit within a large feature canopy located approximately 10 metres above ground level. Due to the prominent location and the size of the glazing panel, the works required detailed planning, specialist access equipment, and careful coordination to ensure the replacement could be completed safely and efficiently.

Working alongside the client and local stakeholders, we developed a comprehensive lifting and installation strategy that allowed the defective glazing unit to be removed and replaced with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

Planned Access. Safe Execution.

Given the canopy’s height and city centre location, public safety was a key consideration throughout the project. A controlled exclusion zone was established beneath the working area, with pedestrian routes carefully managed and the surrounding public realm temporarily cordoned off during lifting operations.

A mobile crane was utilised to safely remove the damaged glazing panel from the canopy structure before lifting the replacement unit into position. All lifting activities were undertaken in accordance with approved lift plans and risk assessments, ensuring the operation was carried out safely and in full compliance with site requirements.

Precision Replacement at Height.

The replacement glazing unit was manufactured to match the existing specification and installed with careful attention to alignment, weatherproofing, and interface details. Working at height and within a constrained urban environment demanded close coordination between the installation team, crane operator, and site management to achieve a seamless installation.

Despite the logistical challenges associated with access, lifting operations, and public interface management, the works were completed efficiently and without incident.

Restoring Performance and Appearance.

The completed project successfully restored the canopy’s structural integrity, weather performance, and visual appearance. Through meticulous planning, specialist lifting techniques, and a strong focus on safety, the glazing replacement was delivered with minimal disruption to the city centre environment.

The result is a fully reinstated canopy system that continues to provide protection and architectural presence within a prominent Sheffield city centre location.
