C4 Stub Brackets

Photo Heading

Stub brackets are used to provide a stable fixing area for canopy arms from the steelwork in the main structure. They can be adapted to suit any length and any type of internal steel, I beams, Universal channels, box section beams etc. The stub is bolted to the internal steel and the face plate which receives the canopy arm either left flush with the external materials face or in a position where facing materials can cover the plate. Once the contractor has finished the external facing materials the canopy arms are simply bolted to the projecting fixings. This method of fixing means that limited work to the facing materials are required (cutting, shaping etc) and that projecting arms are not left for the contractor to work round whilst doing external works. This is particularly important for curtain walling and brick face finishes where operatives are in constant danger from projecting steel arms whilst trying to work round them.

C5 Polycarbonate Sheet Fixing

Photo Heading

Most suppliers method of fixing polycarbonate is to simple fire inadequate fixings through the polycarbonate or PETG sheets directly into a steel frame. Urban Design are aware of the numerous maintenance and strength problems this causes for clients. Particularly those products suffering from the effects of wind flutter, a condition brought on by inadequate fixings pulling through sheet material which is too thin. Compromising on initial product quality will inevitably cost in future repairs. As standard Urban Design use cold formed aluminium clamping straps with full neoprene gaskets to both the straps and the steel frame to which the polycarbonate is fixed, to not only isolate the materials but also to ensure a watertight connection. In addition we use heavy duty fixings and where possible hide the fixing head with colour coded caps, as seen in the image here. For advise and recommendations on the use of polycarbonate sheeting please contact our sales department who will be please to assist you in best practice methods.

C6 Glass Edge Protection

Photo Heading

Even when rounded or polished the weakest part of all glass panels tend to be the exposed edges. It is important that during the design process that consideration as to how potential damage to the glazing can be caused and what can be done to prevent it. As part of our design specifications we regularly include for clients on toughened safety glass exposed edges (which are open to potential damage and vandalism) a stainless steel bonded edge trim section as seen in the photograph. On laminate glass panels this trim is regularly used to hide and protect the laminated glass edges, which show the PVB central layers – continued exposure of these edges can lead to delamination of the glass panels.

C7 Steel End Cappings

Photo Heading

Urban Design believes the fine finishing of all components within their structures is of prime importance. Whilst many manufacturers simply cap off ends of steel sections with inferior rubber bungs and grommets we use only best practice methods and close all steel members using fully welded and fettled steel end caps as can be seen in the examples below. Laser profiled steel plates are welded into the ends of the RHS,CHS or SHS members, fully fillet welded, fettled and over painted to match the structure. This method of working prevents the possibility of water ingress within the structure, weakening the steelwork. It also avoids the possible removal of any plastic caps.

C8 Tube Connections

Photo Heading

Urban Design believes the structural integrity and fine finishing of all components within their structures is of prime importance. Connection of horizontal tubes is a regular structural feature of our structures and one where clients normally ask for the minimum visible structural connection. By the use of welded spigot connectors as shown in the images below only minimal fixings are visible once the connection has been made. Here we see a running member being slid over a spigot tube which is pre welded to a canopy arm. The tubes will be bolted in place once located in position on site. Whilst a more labour intensive system in the production process, we believe the end result is visibly far more pleasing than the heavy bolt and plate systems regularly seen on structures and it is a system our clients regularly request on repeat projects.

C11 Canopy Damage

Photo Heading

This section details why at Urban Design we choose to use only the best materials and manufacturing methods. Clients who have opted for cheaper style products and fixing methods from alternative sources, rather than using Urban Designs high quality schemes, are discovering increasing problems and issues with materials and workmanship. In the more serious cases inadequate canopies have been collapsing during the recent severe weather under the weight of snow, endangering members of the public. In particular this is affecting unsupported cantilevered canopies i.e. one which is attached directly to the building without the addition of any other supports or posts. As a result of incidents our advice to all users is to: • Check all canopies for signs of damage/ collapse • Cordon off any unsupported canopies during severe weather and do not use the area under such canopies until they have been independently assessed. • Ensure all canopies are inspected following adverse weather for signs of damage • Ensure all canopies have been appropriately designed to take the weight of large volumes of snow. Canopies for which a submission through Local Authority building control was made should have allowed in the design calculations for snow loading. If you have any immediate concerns regarding the structural stability of your canopy, please contact our technical sales team who will be happy to arrange an inspection and report and advise any costs which may apply. Images of canopy failures and inadequate fixing methods provided by our some of our competitors are shown below.

Our aim is to educate Clients, Contractors and Architects with regard to why cheapest is not always best. Here are examples of bolted glazing works carried out where Urban Design have been called in to rectify appalling standards of work executed by inexperienced sub contractors using inferior materials.
